Marabou storks are the Ugandan version of pigeons in the US.   They're everywhere.  They look like pterodactyls but they're harmless and just eat waste and glide over the city with their huge wingspans.

Geckos or lizards hang out on the ceiling in the Makerere guest house where I'm staying.

I walked behind the fellow with the machine gun on my way to the hospital one afternoon.  Apparently he was a police officer.

The above picture is part of the normal commute to and from the hospital.  Below is the shortcut I took one morning with Carlo, an Italian infectious disease doctor.  The cab took us through one of the more famous slums of Kampala.  The big building in the background is Mulago Hospital where I'm working.

This is rush hour traffic on the shortcut from Mulago to Makere.

We played ultimate frisbee with the club team in Kampala and some expats from the US and some other countries.

My first mosquito net.

A mosque on the Makerere University Campus and a skyscraper in the background.
